Do you have spot metering linked to the AF point by chance? Might want to reset all the settings and start fresh with what you prefer. I've never had any issues with the evaluative metering. Sounds like a setting is off somewhere perhaps. It took me a while to realize what a gem of a camera 7D is.

I’m rather irritated when a great camera is branded outdated. Because it never is. For example, if two photographers shoot an event one with R5 and the other with 5D Classic, I can guarantee that common viewers might prefer the latter camera’s images. The job of a camera is creating photos. New technologies do improve the usability and operability of cameras however, those are science. On the contrary, photography is an art that hasn’t changed and won’t ever. This art can be created by any artist focusing on art with any camera. Therefore, a camera is never old or incapable of doing its job.

Back to 7D. I observed the photographers using 7D never felt replacing this camera necessary and went on shooting on and on. Most of those bodies surpassed their manufacturer rated shutter life by big margins as they clicked say 500k or more. Moreover, I knew its strengths thus decided to buy one used. Luckily got one three years ago with a shutter count of 19k and bought it for 300 dollars.

I use 7D mainly for bird flight shots paired with EF 400mm f/5.6L (best combo IMO) handheld. However, use it as multipurpose camera as well like street and lifestyle photography and landscape. I shoot everyday but since, I use multiple cameras, pressure on any particular body is not very high. I’ve clicked around 30k shots during the last three years with it and hope to do many more. When I go wildlife shooting to distant palaces, 7D is invariably my second camera after 1DIV. The heavier combo (1DIV + 300mm f/2.8L IS II + 2x III) rests on a tripod or monopod while the lighter combo (7D + 400mm f5.6L) performs the handheld tasks.

Many are of the opinion that; compared to its successor, this Mark I version is superior in many departments.

On recording videos. This is the weakest part of my copy. It stops abruptly while recording videos. So, I turned off this option and use it purely as a viewfinder based stills camera. I’m not into videos so, don’t mind having it this way. Sometimes, I do record casual videos with my smartphone when felt necessary.

Thank you for the great review.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10476314654407439756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-54429480587618573372024-01-01T04:01:58.998-08:002024-01-01T04:01:58.998-08:00Hi Carl,

Chipping in after a while.

I’m a big fan of old DSLRs because IMO, those cameras produce better image quality and are easy to operate.

Wondering how come you are regularly reviewing the cameras I love! First it was 1D Mark IV, today I read about 40D and perhaps there’s one on 5D Classic as well. Being a hobbyist Canon shooter for 15 years; these are the cameras I love. Used 50D for four years and sold it out. Didn’t like it very much although it was good in good light. Started my photography life with 450D and 50D but never had 40D. Entered into full frame world in 2016 with my son’s 6D which was great. Then bought my own almost new FF 5DII in 2018, went on to grab a 5D Classic and 7D two years ago and last year got a 5DIII as gift from son as well. Bought 1DIV two years ago. All used which is why didn’t have to rob a bank.

On 40D. I fell in love with it after buying 50D new in 2009 as I reviewed the images on the net shot with 40D. Moreover, I’m a permanent fan of bigger pixels which is why 40D and 5D are my darlings. Bought a couple of 40D bodies 20 months ago but both were heavily used and had nagging issues. Now, they sit on various shelves in my house as decoration pieces.

As per my destiny in most cases; I’m never lucky. However, this time it was an exception when I tried for the 3rd copy of 40D. I live in Bangladesh and ordered a used 40D from B&H used department through my friend living in Washington. He bought it from them in September 2023 for 170 US dollars. Sent it through another friend last month which I received 3 days ago. Would you believe what I’ll tell you now? It’s completely new. After opening the B&H package (not the original Canon package); I was pleasantly greeted by the typical new camera aroma. Every spot of it is oven-fresh. Hurriedly checked the shutter count, it was 1874. Unbelievable? Believe it. Perhaps it was a display model in a showroom and those actuations were clicked by visiting customers for testing purpose. The firmware is 1.0.8 but would prefer to get the last one.

Now I own six Canon DSLRs and all are my darlings. 5D, 5DII, 5DIII, 1DIV, 7D and 40D. But two stand out for one special feature i.e., less distraction. 5D Classic and 40D are devoid of video option which is a huge plus for me as I’m not into videos. They enable me to exclusively concentrate on still photography like the good old days.

Out of curiosity; I bought 90D as well about a year ago. After using it for two months, returned it. The IQ wasn’t good at all.

Not interested in mirrorless cameras as they failed to impress me with any of their features. Therefore, staying with real cameras and enjoying photography as a heart-melting hobby. I shoot everyday for street and lifestyle photos, landscape and wildlife. Built up my lens arsenal over the last 15 years and own 9 native glasses including one premium. No third party glass as I’m not very confident on those. However, bought one used first party lens. Call it first party because cannot give it a “third party” tag. It’s a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 ZE T* full manual focus lens. Just another gem.

Old gears enable me enjoy this beautiful hobby of photography to the fullest. BTW, I gathered CCD sensors produce better color accuracy. Wondering whether Canon produced any such DSLR! So, preparing to grab one Nikon D40 with kit lens.

Thank you very much for the review.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-72150537504978290892023-12-30T11:29:10.109-08:002023-12-30T11:29:10.109-08:00Thank you for this review. One thing still puzzles me and that is the metering. I use one point focus all of the time which works great with the 40d. On the 7d I get conflicting metering in the evaluative mode. Almost like you use spot metering. When I use center weighted reading things improve but I often find myself using manual expose. Why has the 7d more trouble in getting consistent light measuement?
Greetings,
JonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-82313882034434020322023-12-19T14:59:57.498-08:002023-12-19T14:59:57.498-08:00I love the tilt screen on the K1.I love the tilt screen on the K1.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-68976144286836158712023-10-28T02:32:31.852-07:002023-10-28T02:32:31.852-07:00Your review of the Fujifilm X-PRO 1 is both inform...Your review of the Fujifilm X-PRO 1 is both informative and captivating. Too many c...I have been going on a similar journey. Too many cameras (and lenses!) and am slowly rationalising my kit. I am keeping my K1 ii as it is awesome for what I got it for - landscape and still life and I especially enjoy using it with vintage K mount MF glass. Although due to its size and heft it's no everyday walk about camera, it does get used in that role occasionally. For light weight and take anywhere I have settled on the Fujifilm X-T10 with either TTartisans 27mm or Fuji's XC 35mm f2. For playing about with manual focus glass I find the X-T1 to be my weapon of choice. However, although I really like the Fujifilm cameras especially for B&W, to my eyes at least, Pentax colours look so much better and require less post processing so to that end I want a reasonably small walk about design to use with a couple of MF lenses - K 30mm f2.8 and K 50mm Macro. To that end I have tracked down a K5 with battery grip with just under 1400 shots for the princely sum of £200. I will be sad to see my KP go and even more so my beloved K3, but they were purchased in a different time when FF Pentax was unavailable to me and nowadays neither gets to see much use. I will not miss the extra resolution of the KP and K3. I know that 16mp even with an AA filter is more than enough resolution for the maximum size prints I am likely to want (I have 20"X16" prints from my Q on my wall and they look fine at normal viewing distances). I had considered a K30 (an especially handsome camera in black IMO) with a replacement solenoid, but they were considerably more expensive than a K5Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-26262695548107976702023-10-01T15:35:34.124-07:002023-10-01T15:35:34.124-07:00I very much enjoyed reading your article!
When I w...I very much enjoyed reading your article!
When I wanted to go digital 10 years ago, I knew nothing by that I loved my K1000 and had little money. I happened to find a K5iis second hand at my local camera store, and it seemed a no brainer because I could use my lenses.
When my kids came along, I bought a mirrorless to be easier at odd angles and as my wife was used to shooting with an LCD similar to her phone (this worked and she is now a professional photographer). But the K5 was relegated to the shelf and I never thought much about other models, just assumed they were dinosaurs (if beautiful dinosaurs).

But then recently I was encouraged to pick it up again, and fell in love! I just love the process, the IQ is better than my modern mirrorless, and the black and white jpegs bring my heart so much joy that doesn't make me want to pixel peep or waste my life in light room.
... and then I started wondering whether a K3iii or K1ii would be better. What about FA/DA lenses. This isn't my work camera, and doesn't earn it's keep, so I had no justification to buy one but I kind of felt bad about my old, slow K5iis...
... and then I hear murmurs of it being peoples favourite Pentax DSLR!!! but why? I don't understand. Then comes your story.
My favourite element is that you're not saying its the best workhorse camera for a professional photographer, but that as a every day camera to enjoy, it's impeccable.
(This busted my thoughts of buying a K1, as APSC is more than fine!)

Any way, I am very thankful to have bought this camera, and even more thankful that people like yourself have shared your stories that bust these myths many of us have bought about newer, faster, bigger, being better.exAequoranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938824791812834583.post-34543610389953822292023-09-05T00:53:39.453-07:002023-09-05T00:53:39.453-07:00Great read thank you.
